Established in June 2013, The National Network for the Education of Care Leavers (NNECL) is committed to the progression and support of care leavers in higher education. NNECL believes that children who grew up in care should have the same aspirations as any other child but unfortunately, only 6% of care leavers go into higher education.
NNECL is trying to raise that percentage by making sure that care leavers learn about educational opportunities from a young age, receive encouragement and guidance regardless of their attainment and age, have a team of relevant and informed people to guide their transition, receive relevant support throughout their studies and achieve their education goals without compromise. However, this would not be possible without the support of local authority workers and of those taking on the role of care leaver contact.
This is why NNECL has produced two guides to support and inform local authorities and HEIs in their work supporting looked after children and care leavers.
